DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN PHARMACOGNOSY AND COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE

Overview

BACKGROUND


Complementary medicine is currently the fastest growing form of health care worldwide in both
developed and developing countries. It is estimated by the World Health Organization that a big
percentage of the world population still relies on complementary medicine to meet its health
needs. In many countries complementary medicine is gaining popularity as a mainstream
therapy. Today, complementary medicines are being employed worldwide in a variety of health
care settings and as home remedies. Safety, efficacy, quality, access and rational use of this
form of health care are issues of concern. The PhD in Pharmacognosy and Complementary
Medicine is intended to produce a pool of highly trained personnel who will be involved in
research and development, policy aspects of medicines from nature and complementary
medicine. Graduates of this course will be in demand in research institutions, pharmaceutical
firms dealing with phytomedicines, teaching at universities and tertiary institutions or as
practitioners in traditional medicine.

OBJECTIVES

The goal of the programme is to train a pool of competent, independent scientists, researchers and practitioners in pharmacognosy and complementary medicine who shall apply their practical knowledge and research skills in academia, independent research laboratories and scientific, health or industrial enterprises in both the public and private sectors.

STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMME

The PhD in Pharmacognosy and Complementary Medicine shall be a by thesis only.

The programme shall run over a minimum period of six semesters of fifteen weeks each

MODE OF DELIVERY OF THE PROGRAMME

The course shall be offered by blended learning comprising of didactic lectures, seminars, class discussions and presentations, and mentored research.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The following shall be eligible for admission into the programme:

  • A holder of a Master of Pharmacy, Master of Medicine, Master of Dental Surgery, Master of Science in Nursing and Master of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Nairobi or any other institution recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate, OR;
  • A holder of a Master of Science in Biological Sciences from the University of Nairobi or any other institution recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate, OR;
  • A holder of a Masters degree from the University of Nairobi or any other institution recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate deemed to be equivalent to any of the degrees specified above, and who provides evidence of an adequate background of study and capacity to carry out original research in the selected area of pharmacology.
  • Applicants from non-English speaking countries shall provide evidence of proficiency English.

 

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

When To Apply - applications for admission are received on a rolling basis, and you should try to apply as soon as possible after you meet the admission requirements stipulated above. Module II applications may be submitted directly here.

Application Fees - an application fee of Ksh 3000.00 for Module II applications must be paid for every application.

Required documentation – copies of your KCSE (or GCSE/GCE) certificate, Bachelor’s degree certificate plus transcripts, Masters degree plus transcripts. You must also submit a certified copy of a picture ID (national identity card, passport biodata page). All uploaded documents must be certified, clear and legible.

ATTACHMENT OPPORTUNITIES

The Department is committed, whenever possible, to providing the students with opportunities to acquire, sharpen their knowledge and gain technical/practical skills to complement their studies in order to enhance their employability in line with the Kenya vision 2030. Attachment is provided to students from recognized learning institutions during their final two years of study.

Only attachés from Government recognized Training Institutions shall be eligible for intake.

A candidate who satisfies the examiners in the thesis examinations shall, on the recommendation of the Committee of Examiners and approval of Senate, be awarded the degree of PhD in pharmacognosy and complementary medicine of the University of Nairobi.

A candidate who fails the thesis examination may on the recommendation of the Committee of Examiners and approval of Senate, be allowed to resubmit the thesis after three months. A candidate who fails in the second resubmission of the thesis, shall on the recommendation of the Committee of Examiners and approval of Senate, be discontinued.
