DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN MOLECULAR PHARMACOLOGY

Overview

OBJECTIVES

The goal of the programme is to train a pool of competent, independent scientists, researchers and practitioners in pharmacology who shall apply their practical knowledge and research skills in academia, independent research laboratories and scientific, health or industrial enterprises in both the public and private sectors.

PHILOSOPHY

The 20th and 21st centuries have witnessed a tremendous growth in the number and complexity of new drugs and therapeutic technologies that continue to immensely impact the preventive, promotive and curative aspects of health. However, most of these developments and discoveries are driven by the developed world and the low- and middle-income countries are largely consumers of these products. A bold and positive step to progressively and constructively engage in international cutting-edge collaborative research is to build human capacity and expertise in pharmacology at the highest level. Due to the broad nature of the discipline of pharmacology, this calls for learners to pursue lines of specializations within the discipline.

RATIONALE

The philosophy of the programme is to empower the learner as a capable, independent scientist /practitioner advancing the frontiers of knowledge in the study of the effects and application of drugs and chemicals on biological systems, guided by their chosen areas of specialization. Pharmacology is the branch of biomedical science concerned with the modes of action, uses and effects of drugs and chemicals on biological systems. It is a core science upon which medical training and practice is based. Pharmacological investigations and research play a pivotal role in the drug development process, providing crucial data to support the progression of compounds along the drug development value chain. In the clinical setting, clinical pharmacology data helps to understand drug responses observed in patients, as well as identify and appraise the impact of toxic materials on humans and other biosystems hence shaping and influencing practice and policy
