Overview
Candidates who pass both taught courses and thesis examinations shall be awarded a Master of Science degree in Molecular Pharmacology [MSc. Mol. Pharmacol.) of University of Nairobi.
The University of Nairobi rules and regulations on course exemptions and credit transfer shall apply.
A candidate may be exempted from some course units subject to the following conditions:-
i. Must have passed in similar course units at Masters or Postgraduate diploma level in the University of Nairobi or in institutions recognized by the Senate of the University of Nairobi.
ii. No candidate shall be exempted for more than one third of the total number of courses required in the degree programme.
iii. A formal request for exemptions and credit transfer should be made in writing on admission to the Director Board of Postgraduate Studies, through the Dean of the School of Pharmacy and must be accompanied by officially endorsed supporting documents which should include the institution's syllabus for the relevant course.
Applications for credit transfer or course exemptions shall be processed only after payment of the
prescribed fees.
Structure
The program will be offered on full time basis. The duration of the program will be a minimum of four (4) semesters of 15 weeks each equivalent to two academic years and a maximum of eight (8) semesters equivalent to four academic years. An academic year shall consist of two semesters of 15 weeks each.
The course shall be in two parts: Part I consisting of course work and Part II devoted to research leading to a thesis.
In the first year, students shall be required to take all the prescribed courses. The course will be conducted through lectures, practicals, tutorials and seminars and assessed by continuous assessments and end of semester examinations.
A candidate shall only proceed to the next year of study after successful completion of the first year.
The candidate shall be required to prepare a research proposal whose theme shall be within the identified area of interest. The proposal shall be developed in consultation with the supervisor(s) and submitted for consideration by the Departmental and School Postgraduate Study Committees and appropriate Institutional Ethical Review Boards as may be required.
The proposal must be ready for submission and approval to the various Review Committees by the end of first year of study.
In addition to the formal courses, the candidate shall be expected to participate in the at least 4 Colloquia and appropriate Journal/Research club meetings.
Admission Requirements
The common regulations for the Masters Degrees of the University of Nairobi shall apply.
Applicants eligible for admission into the programme shall have the following minimum qualifications.
i. Holders of: Bachelor of Pharmacy, Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine, Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, Bachelor of Dental Surgery and Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
ii. Holders of at least Upper Second class Bachelor of Science in Physiology or Biochemistry.
iii Holders of a Lower Second Class Bachelor of Science degree in the disciplines mentioned in 2.2. (ii) Above plus a Post Graduate Diploma in a relevant area or three years research experience.
iv. Holders of equivalent qualifications from institutions recognised by the Senate of the University of Nairobi
Careers
- To equip students with knowledge and skills to read and evaluate scientific literature and to engage in independent and original research in basic molecular pharmacology and its application in drug discovery and drug development.
- To equip the student with adequate knowledge and skills to translate the basic knowledge in molecular pharmacology to clinical situations and its application in disease diagnosis and management.

Exam Regulations
EXAMINATION REGULATIONS (On Course work)
The Common rules and regulations for examinations of Masters Degrees in the University of Nairobi shall apply.
A candidate shall be allowed to sit for examinations only if he/she has attended
at least two thirds of the prescribed courses.
Examinations for each taught course shall be held at the end of the semester in which it was taught.
The final university examination shall be marked out of 100% with a pass mark of 50%.
The end of semester examination in each course shall constitute 70 % of the final mark while the continuous assessment shall constitute 30 % of the final mark.
Continuous assessment shall consist of written examinations, term papers, seminar presentations, practical exercises as may be prescribed in each course.
A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in up to 50 % of the courses in each semester, shall on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners of the School of Pharmacy and approval by Senate, be allowed to take a supplementary examination in the failed course(s) within three months.
The mark obtained in any supplementary examination shall be recorded as 50 %.
A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in more than 50 % of the courses in each semester, shall on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners of the School of Pharmacy and approval by Senate, be expected to repeat the whole year.
A candidate who fails a supplementary examination or fails to complete the program in the allocated time shall, on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners of the School of Pharmacy and approved by the Senate of the University of Nairobi, be discontinued.
Candidates enrolled for the degree shall be required to take examinations and pass all courses by the end of first year before being allowed to proceed to second year of study.
Passes will be graded as follows:
i. Distinction 75 – 100 %
ii Credit 65 - 74 %
iii Pass 50 – 64 %
The part II examination shall consist of examination of the written thesis and the oral defence.
The Common Rules and Regulations for Submission and Examination of Thesis of the University of Nairobi shall apply.
A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in the thesis shall be, on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners of the School of Pharmacy and approval by Senate, be allowed to resubmit the thesis within 12 months
A candidate who fails the thesis examination on resubmission shall, on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners of the School of Pharmacy and approval of Senate, be discontinued.
