International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) grant

This IRES track II grant was awarded to Bowie State University, in collaboration with Morgan State University in Baltimore MD, and is entitled IRES Track II. Engage Globally: Tropical Plants Metabolomics Advanced Studies Institute in Kenya,”

The grant will train ten graduate students from the US paired with a similar number of Kenyan students for three weeks annually during winter/ summers of 2021- 2023 for a series of Advanced Studies Institutes. Training will be primarily conducted at Nairobi University with collaborating organizations in Kenya in the area of Plant Bioactive compounds.

 

The PI of the grant is Dr Anne Osano of Bowie State University. Collaborators at the School of Pharmacy (SOP) are Dr Margaret Oluka and Dr Peggoty Mutai

The Kenyan Team hosted experts on HPTLC from CAMAG Switzerland who gave a presentation on: Introduction to HPTLC and applications to natural product research

The meeting at the SOP was hosted by Dr Margaret Oluka and attended by Faculty with interest in natural product research. Those included Prof Okalebo, Dr Ongarora, Dr Mutai, Dr Karumi, Dr Mungai, Dr Bosire and  Dr Mukungu.

 The HPTLC presentation was made by DR Tien Do, an expert in HPTLC from CAMAG international. Also in attendance was Dr Raphael Vizzini (CAMAG) and Mr Ian Ochieng the local CAMAG representative.
