INTRODUCTION TO PHARMACY TRAINING IN KENYA

In 1974, the Late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta established the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Nairobi to train pharmacist doctors to deliver quality healthcare and support the local Pharmaceutical Industry. The program began with 30 students which has expanded to 80 - 100 students annually. The department consisted of four sections: Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmaceutics, and Pharmacognosy. In 1995, the department was upgraded to a Faculty with three fully fledged departments, with plans to grow to six in the future a dream yet to be achieved. The department graduated the first lot  of 25 Pharmacists in 1978 and to date (2024) the total number of UoN Pharmacy Alumni stands at around.....????.

BACKGROUND OF PHARMACY ALUMNI

The University of Nairobi Faculty of Pharmacy Alumni Association herein under referred to alumni, was conceptualized and formed by the founding members as a forum to keep members connected and also address key challenges facing the Alma mater. It was registered as a Society at the Registrar of Societies (Certificate of registration No 20291) on February 23, 2001.

The Alumni was officially launched on August 4, 2001 by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nairobi, Prof Francis Gichaga at an colourful alumni dinner held at the Intercontinental Hotel, Nairobi in the presence of the alumni Lawyer Mr.G.M. Muhoro Advocate with the Dean, Faculty of Pharmacy, Prof Anastasia.N.Guantai as the Chairperson.

SCOPE OF OPERATION:

The Alumni shall operate as a welfare body that is non-profit making and non-political.

MISSION:

 To provide assistance in all manner possible in development and expansion of the profession of pharmacy.

OBJECTIVES OF THE ALUMNI

  1. Professional Identity and Growth
  2. Mentorship and Networking opportunities
  3. Faculty Development
  4. Social and professional welfare of members

MEMBERSHIP ELIGIBLITY

Membership of the Alumni shall include:

  1. All graduates of Pharmacy of the University of Nairobi
  2. Honorary members:
  • Teaching staff who are not graduates of the faculty
  • Retired and Former members of the teaching staff who had served the Faculty for not less than 5 years.      
  • Honorary Membership can be awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to the Alumni cause, as determined by the management Committee.

 

Pharmacy Alumni as a chapter of University of Nairobi Alumni Association (UONAA)

 The UoN Faculty of Pharmacy Alumni was also launched as an official chapter of the UONAA on April, 29, 2009 in the School of Pharmacy Boardroom with Prof A.N. Guantai as the Chairperson.
