DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN CLINICAL PHARMACY

Overview

The field of pharmaceutical care is dynamic and changing rapidly. The emergence of new diseases coupled with resistance and tolerance to drugs provide new challenges that require innovative and creative ways to surmount them. The mainstay to combat these challenges is high caliber research that requires competent human resource in various fields of healthcare. The main goal of Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Pharmacy program is to develop researchers and practitioners who have wide knowledge about their area, strong research skills which are demonstrated by generating new knowledge, well equipped with translational competencies to undertake a range of careers, and competencies to work in different cultural contexts. In order to effectively pursue this course, the graduate students are expected to have certain attributes. These include independence, innovation and creativity. In addition, they should have the ability to develop in-depth knowledge of research area, critically read research papers, apply suitable research methods to rigorously explore a given problem, aspiration to do high quality work and publish in highly reputable venues, communicate effectively, integrate with scientific community and effectively collaborate with other researchers.

 

The common regulations for the PhD degree in the University of Nairobi shall apply.

A candidate applying for admission into the programme must satisfy all the following eligibility criteria:

 

Holders of Master of Pharmacy in clinical Pharmacy degree of the University of Nairobi or an equivalent degree from an institution recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate.

 

Must be registered by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya or an equivalent regulatory body in their respective country and be in the retention list.

 

An international candidate shall be required to obtain a temporary practice license from the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya.

 

The candidate should have worked in a relevant field for at least three years after registration by their regulatory body.

 

A candidate must possess valid evidence of indemnity cover for the entire period of clinical training.

 

 Foreign candidates from non-English speaking countries must show evidence of proficiency in English language from a recognized institution.

A holder of a PhD in Clinical Pharmacy shall have the requisite competencies to work in different   areas. They include academia, research institutions, healthcare facilities and other relevant organizations.
